FAQ

What is NAÏVE?

NAÏVE is a stand-alone desktop app that helps you automatically cut shake and overexposure, create proxy files and synchronize media in one place. It works with Windows 7+ and macOS 10.14+.

We made it desktop-only so you can work with large amounts of footage faster, easier and more secure 🤓

How it works?

Defects
NAÏVE evaluates how each frame changes over its duration. If the frame changes , it is considered a defect. The frame is divided into parts, and the change is separately evaluated in each part.
This is necessary so that the movement of objects within the frame does not affect the assessment of the camera movement.
Synchronization
We compare how similar the audio tracks of different media files are to each other. We are looking for this arrangement of tracks relative to each other, where the audio waves intersect.
For speed and accuracy, we use metadata from audio recorders: this allows you to instantly synchronize all files from the recorder related to one recording.
Proxy files
We use FFmpeg to render proxy files in the most common and necessary formats: Apple ProRes Proxy, Avid DNxHD LB and H.264. That way you have three options of bit-rate to choose from and compress just enough not to interfere with the editing :)

Does NAÏVE work offline?

The application requires a constant connection to the Internet but all the processing happens on your computer. Nothing is uploaded to the cloud.
We need an Internet connection to validate the Premium subscription. We plan to get away from this in the future and make it possible to work offline.
We also collect minimal usage data to make the service more suitable for your needs. We integrate new features are based on the real needs of users, and not on our speculations.

Downloading and installing

The installation process is straightforward but if you need a more detailed explanation we prepared brief instructions for Windows and macOS users. They will help you install NAÏVE in minutes! ⚡

How do I get started?

After you successfully installed NAÏVE you will be asked to create an account. This is needed to let you access the Premium plan. Our AI will adapt to your footage overtime and show better results.
Soon we will also add personal statistics and other useful features to user accounts!

What file formats does NAÏVE support?

NAÏVE works with the popular video formats: MPEG4, MTS, MOV, MXF. For audio, it works with WAV, MP3, M4A, AAC, AIFF.

Do I need to prepare footage for processing?

You can use NAÏVE straight after the filming. You don't need to organize your footage specifically for NAÏVE.
However, if you want extra speed we've prepared an instruction for Windows and macOS users. ⚡

Can I process several folders?

Yes! Just make sure they are all located within one folder you drop into the app.

How long does the processing take?

Usually, the processing takes as long as your footage is on a weaker computer. It depends on your PC power and faster computers process the footage rapidly. You can read more about the processing [here](https://help.naive.pro/en/articles/3704442-how-processing-works).

What will I get after the processing?

After NAÏVE finishes its work you will be able to export an XML file. The size and complexity of the XML file depend on the size and number of files in your source folder. If you are working with a large project, it may take some time to import the XML as files are linking.
It is also worth noting that an XML is just a markup file. Your footage files are safe and sound.
We've written a detailed article about an XML and export here.
After import, you will see that two sequences: all footage and clean footage. Your source footage is in the folder named "footages". If you have used a proxy rendering feature, an XML will be linked to proxy files. If not, an XML will refer to the original footage.
In "all footage" sequence the footage is divided into two tracks: track number 2 contains all the clean footage, track number 1 – footage in which NAÏVE found technical defects. All footage is also arranged in chronological order. Thus, all your source footage in front of your eyes, already marked out in two groups.
In track number 2, “defects” are color-coded, and are currently divided into two large groups: blue means shake and other sudden camera movements, purple means camera adjustments.

I don't film much footage and I use only one camera with no need for proxy files, which plan is for me?

Even with small footage, there're lots of ways to spend your time other than trimming defective shots out. Use cut shake & overexposure feature on the Free plan and enjoy your free time as you like! 😊

I film multicam footage, which plan should I choose?

The Premium plan will be your go-to. Media synchronization is extremely useful to you. It is available on the Premium plan. You can find value in this feature during the 2 weeks free trial.

What is a 2 weeks trial?

We made the Premium plan features available for free during the first 2 weeks of usage. This way you can give it a try and then choose the plan that suits you the most.

What happens after the 2 weeks trial?

Can I downgrade back to the Free plan from the Premium?
